A very big Thank You to Waitrose Hereford for looking after us so well at the Wine and Cheese Taster evening on Monday 9 November, everyone that attended agreed that we ought to make it an annual event – hint, hint!!
The evening started off with a lovely surprise when James Turrell, department manager presented Sharon Pugh from HCS with a cheque for £379. This was raised by members of the public using the tokens scheme – thank you to everyone who dropped their token/s into our box.
Muriel Blott, deli and cheese expert, who organised the whole evening for us provided a very informative description of the ingredients used in the delicious nibbles that she and Shona Taylor had prepared for us, whilst wine expert Neil Bell told us about the wines and cider we would be tasting.
We started off with a light, sparkling Cava Brut and coated almonds which got us all in the mood, this was followed by horseradish beef in croustades accompanied by a Malbec wine. We moved on to a sauvignon blanc with goats chees and onion relish on a crispy cracker. Wonky Barn willy’s cider and a slice of crisp apple complemented the red Leicester cheese perfectly.
The final taster of the evening was a Beauville blue cheese on crusty bread with a Riesling. By this time it must be said that we were all feeling nicely relaxed. Maggie Matthews won first prize on the raffle and chose a bottle of the Malbec as her prize.
Special thanks go to Waitrose staff Nigel Clarke, John Cunniffe and Kathy Patterson who were very attentive, making sure we were wined and dined and well looked after and we mustn’t forget Jo Martin and Nicky Camp who, although behind the scenes, did a grand job keeping the washing up under control!
Thank you Muriel, your team of helpers and Waitrose management for thinking of HCS and family carers and for providing such an enjoyable evening for us all.
