The answers may seem obvious to those who make, yet can be surprisingly difficult for others to pin down.  Craft can enhance the quality of life for people from all backgrounds, INCLUDING CARERS!

How can participating in craft as a leisure or career improve physical, mental and emotional wellbeing?

Health

Research suggests knitting can be addictive – in a good way.  Knitting, can replace other addictions and help with weight loss, reduce binge eating, smoking and drinking alcohol and the constant checking and rechecking symptoms of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

At the route of this ‘constructive addictiveness’ are rhythmic, repetitive movements characteristics of knitting and many other craft activities.  This type of activity occupies and distracts the brain but also has been proven to raise levels of mood while inducing the relaxation and ‘mindfulness’.

Other benefits for your wellbeing include quieting chronic stress and anxiety, improving dexterity for those suffering from arthritis and muscular disorders AND reducing chronic pain.  The sense of achievement gained from craft and the social interaction it encourages can help combat the isolation of depression.
